Job Summary

ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company (EMRE) has an immediate opening for a computational physicist. The position is in the Computational Physics Section at EMREs Corporate Strategic Research Laboratories located in Annandale, New Jersey. The Computational Physics Section is a multidisciplinary group of scientists conducting fundamental research in computational methods aimed at solving large-scale physical problems arising in the energy industry, with focus on such areas as wave propagation, flow in porous media, PDE-constrained optimization, inverse problems, multi-scale phenomena, rock deformation and failure, granular physics, solid-fluid interactions, and computational fluid dynamics. The work environment is highly collaborative, and candidates are expected to work in partnership with experimental, theoretical, and computational scientists and engineers across the organization. Successful candidates have the potential to become scientific leaders, developing new insights needed to capture key mechanisms, processes and parameters, and guiding research directions that address critical technical questions.

Job Role Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of novel computational algorithms for solving large-scale physical problems pertaining to the energy industry, including but not limited to those arising in modeling subsurface phenomena.

Required Job Qualifications

Ph.D. in Physics, Engineering Sciences, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field.


The successful candidate should have:

  • a demonstrated ability to solve physical problems by developing and/or adapting novel computational methods.
  • good verbal and written presentation skills, along with a strong record of publications and presentations. 
  • the ability and desire to grow into new science as well as the ability to work across disciplines and organizations. 
     

Preferred Job Qualifications

Candidates with experience in developing novel multi-scale, multi-physics numerical methods for solving computational solid or fluid mechanics problems will be given additional consideration. 

Experience with parallel computing and programming using modern languages in collaborative environments is desirable. 


ExxonMobils Corporate Strategic Research (CSR) laboratory is a powerhouse formed around a core of about 150 Ph.D. performing fundamental multi-disciplinary research that can lead to technologies having a direct impact on solving the worlds energy challenges. Our facilities are centrally located in scenic Annandale, New Jersey, approximately one hour from both New York City and Philadelphia.
